A primary care physician or PCP, is a health care professional who provides both the first contact for a person with an undiagnosed health concern as well as continuing care for a variety of medical conditions. PCPs are often our first stop for medical care. Primary care physicians provide preventive care, teach patients how to make healthy lifestyle choices, diagnose and treat common medical conditions and make referrals to specialists when needed.
Many patients stay with their primary physicians for decades. This kind of long-term relationship helps physicians develop a baseline for wellbeing and really helps them get to know you, allowing for optimal management of your overall health. It’s important to build that relationship with your physician as your primary doctor is essential to helping you navigate to good health – and to stay healthy.
